Description

A hearty and comforting cottage pie recipe from Gordon Ramsay.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large onion, finely diced
  • 2 carrots, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 500 g ground beef
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 tsp fresh rosemary, chopped
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • For the mashed topping:
  • 800 g potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Start by heating olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. As the oil warms, add the diced onions and carrots. Let them cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until they soften and release a gentle sweetness.
  2. Add the garlic and cook briefly, just until fragrant. Then increase the heat slightly and add the ground beef. Break it apart with a spoon and let it brown evenly.
  3. Stir in the tomato paste, letting it cook for a minute to deepen its richness. Pour in the beef broth, then add thyme and rosemary. Season with salt and pepper. Let the mixture simmer gently until it thickens into a rich, hearty filling. Fold in the peas at the end for a pop of color and sweetness.
  4. Meanwhile, boil the potatoes in salted water until tender. Drain them well, then mash with butter and milk until smooth and creamy. Season to taste.
  5. Transfer the beef mixture into a baking dish, spreading it evenly. Spoon the mashed potatoes on top, smoothing them out with a fork.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (400°F) for about 20–25 minutes, until the top is golden and slightly crisp.

Notes
