Description

Deliciously colorful swirled sugar cookies that are perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Food coloring (red, yellow, and any other preferred colors)
  • Additional granulated sugar for rolling
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and granulated sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Add Egg and Vanilla: Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  5. Combine: Gradually blend in the dry ingredients until dough forms.
  6. Divide Dough: Divide the dough evenly into separate bowls, depending on the number of colors you wish to use.
  7. Color the Dough: Add a few drops of food coloring to each portion of dough and mix until fully incorporated.
  8. Create Swirls: Take a small piece of each colored dough and gently roll together into a ball. Be careful not to over-mix to maintain a distinct swirl.
  9. Roll in Sugar: Roll each swirled dough ball in additional granulated sugar.
  10. Bake: Place cookies on the prepared baking sheets about 2 inches apart. Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes, or until edges are set and cookies are lightly golden.
  11. Cool: Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Notes

  • For more vibrant colors, add additional drops of food coloring as needed.
  • Ensure that the butter is softened, not melted, for best texture.
  • These cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week.
  • Experiment with different colors to suit different themes or occasions.
  • If the dough is too sticky, refrigerate for about 30 minutes to make handling easier.
